- A wadi is a valley cut into the earth by running water. Sometimes a wadi will still have water, but often they are dry.
- The Wadi were a humanoid species from the Gamma Quadrant initially discovered by the Vulcans. They became the first official species from the Gamma Quadrant that the Federation made first contact with. They had an unusual preoccupation with games and gambling, including the game Chula. Alpha-currant nectar was a priceless beverage among Wadi society. (DS9: "Move Along Home")
- The term wādī is very widely found in Arabic toponyms. Some Spanish toponyms are derived from Andalusian Arabic where wādī was used to mean a permanent river, for example: Guadalcanal from wādī al-Qanal = "river of refreshment stalls", Guadalajara from wādī al-hidjārah = "river of stones", or Guadalquivir from al-wādī al-kabīr = "the great river". Seasonal streams, frequent in south-east Spain, are called rambla instead. In the Maghreb, the term wadi (wad in Maghrebi Arabic, sometimes transcribed Oued) is applied to all rivers including regular ones.

Die Wadi selbst sind etwas größer als ein durchschnittlicher Mensch und tragen langes Haar. Auf der Stirn befinden sich mehrere Symbole in unterschiedlichen Farben und am Körper einteilige Gewänder mit engen Krägen, die in Form und Farbe variieren. Der Hauptbestandteil der Kultur der Wadi besteht nicht etwa aus Handel oder Diplomatie, sondern aus dem Glücksspiel. Es ist sehr wahrscheinlich, dass die Wadi große Teile des Weltalls auf der Suche nach neuen Spielen durchqueren. Die Wadi reisen stets in Gruppen. Auch im Spiel halten sie zusammen, gleichgültig auf welcher Seite sie stehen. Die Wadi lieben Würfelspiele, aber auch Strategiespiele, solange mit Einsätzen gespielt wird. Auch das Leben scheinen sie als Spiel zu betrachten. Aus diesem Grund nehmen sie die Spielregeln sehr ernst – es wird fair gespielt, oder gar nicht! Als Bestrafung bei einem unfairen Spiel, muss der Betrüger um das Leben seiner Freunde spielen – dies nennen die Wadi Chula. Bei ihren Spielen bieten die Wadi oft kostbarste Gegenstände und Güter als Einsatz. (DS9: )
