  • Amber is fossilized tree resin, usually of a yellow, orange or brown color and of a transparent, cloudy or solid appearance. It has been valued as jewelry from ever since 10,000 BCE, and was often used as a grave good — excavations of the Syrian city of Qatna revealed a tomb inhabited by a lion carved from amber. Because of its originally soft and sticky consistence, amber sometimes contains insects or plant inclusions. In Ancient Greece, medical purposes of Amber were discovered and used through the Middle Ages until the Industrial Age. It was also used as an ingredient in perfumes. If heated under the right conditions, amber becomes a sticky fluid again and produces a light 'pinewood scent'.
