Keladry of Mindelan met the unnamed male smuggler, who also seemed to be the leader of the northern smugglers along the Vassa River, in mid 460 HE. The smuggler had met Nealan of Queenscove prior to this, while the newly made knight was still squire to the famed Alanna of Pirate's Swoop and Olau. It was mainly due to Alanna's husband, George Cooper, that Neal came into contact with the smugglers. The lead smuggler is presumably a member of the Court of the Rogue, having such an unofficial contact as "The Whisper Man" and being a criminal.

The leader has a Smuggler's Den in Scanra on the Vassa. He was unwilling to help them at first, because he did not want to be in trouble with Stenmun Kinslayer or Blayce the Gallan and receive repercussions. His mother, however, urged her son to help them, because she had seen the hand of fate on Kel. He had said, even though Neal paid him five gold nobles for the river crossing, that "The Whisper Man" would owe him a large boon.
