  • Dark Brazilian Empire is a scenario focused in an alternative history about a simultaneously absolutist and dictatorial state that existed between 1957 and 1991 in Brazil. This ATL narrates a sequence of events that made possible a "fusion" of the old 19th century Brazilian Empire with the Cold War military dictatorship. Here's a short summary of this history: In 1889, the coup d'etat that would install a republican government in Brazil fails, and its leader Deodoro da Fonseca is jailed for five years. Because of this, Brazil never becomes a republic and the monarchy lineage continues. Brazil was a important ally of Spain during the first half of the 20th century and it fought in the two world wars as a major Entente and Ally combatant. In 1947, with the beginning of the Cold War, the Empire of Brazil remains a neutral country at the war. Nevertheless, there are several republican and socialist movements in the country during the 1940s and 1950s. In December 1956, many socialist republicans tried consecutively to overthrow the Emperor Dom Pedro III (Pedro Henrique de Orleans e Bragança) and Prime Minister Luís Augusto da Silva, Marquis of Salvador. However, all these attempts fail. In the following years, the United States, along with some European countries, fund the Brazilian government to install in the country a strict capitalist dictatorship that would penalize socialist manifestors with death. In 1962, after a civil war, all political parties are banned and an absolute monarchy is established. Then, the Dark Brazilian Empire is born. Life in the DBE was terrible: the government controls public and private life of people, and citizens were frequently killed for trying to exercising freedom of expression. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Empire initiates an expanding campaign, conquering countries in Latin America and Africa. In 1991, after the end of the Cold War, the Empire is overthrown and a democratic republic is founded. However, in 1993, the monarchy is re-established with a benevolent empire, without strict anti-humanitarian laws. In 2001, all conquered and most annexed countries become independent from Brazil.
