Danny Garrett is the son of the journalist John Garrett. He is with his father, when he goes to Hemingford, but has a troubled relationship with him. He develops a romantic relationship with Lacey Hellerstat, a nineteen year old girl she meets in Hemingford. He also begins a friendship with Micah only to realise that he has become the leader of the cult. When he wanted him to sacrifice Lacey to the demon after having wiped out the majority of the adults in Hemingford, he rebels and stops Micah and the cult with the help of his father and others. He and his father reconcile after the event and, together with Lacey and the schoolteacher, they go away from Hemingford to report what happened in Hemingford.
