In 1966, Dr. Lineback founded The Philosopher’s Index and subsequently established the Philosopher’s Information Center one year later. In 1970, he founded the Philosophy Documentation Center. As director of both centers, he served as editor of The Philosopher’s Index, co-editor of the International Directory of Philosophy and Philosophers, assistant editor of the Directory of American Philosophers, and general editor of the series, Bibliographies of Famous Philosophers. Dr. Lineback graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1958 with a B.A. in philosophy. In 1963, he earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from Indiana University. There he taught philosophy, taught computer science, and managed the Philosophy Documentation Center. He also taught bioethics at the Medical College of Ohio for ten years. Dr. Lineback served on numerous hospital ethics committees, including Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, where he consulted for over twenty years. Dr. Lineback is notable for his broad range of academic interests that, in addition to philosophy, include computer science and information science. His expertise in these three disciplines led him to found The Philosopher’s Index and to later serve as a computer consultant to the National Endowment for the Humanities and to the Kennedy Center for Bioethics. Dr. Lineback served as president of the Association of Philosophy Journal Editors and as president of the National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS).
