This was the first election to take place in Bijan pursuant to the country's new constitution, which came into effect on January 1, 1949. Fourteen parties took part in the election, with eight of them securing at least one seat in the House. The Bijani National Party received a majority of the votes cast, and won 95 of the 150 seats. Nearly 3.8 million Bijanis voted in the election, representing a voter turnout of 83.9%.
