The Artemis-class was put into service with the intention of supplementing—and eventually replacing—the ravaged and aging fleet of Halcyon-class and Marathon-class cruisers, which totaled a meager twelve The UNSC Navy approved of the vessel design in mid-2553, but production was postponed until 2555 in lieu of extensive colonial reconstruction efforts. The first ship of the line and the class' namesake, the UNSC Artemis, was released from the Legacy Drydock in Martian orbit on March 15th, 2556; the second and third vessels of the class, the Marissa LaGuardia and the Cape Mizanga, were commissioned just weeks later.
