- Gangs are often a key part in the stories of the Grand Theft Auto games, commonly, the protagonist will work for, or against, them at certain points in the storyline. They are often quite aggressive and will most likely attack the player if they use a weapon and/or attack them first. Gangs can also offer assistance during some missions, especially in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
- Gangs are groups of criminal exiles who infest portions of Mega City. You will generally find different member hierarchies in each neighborhood (with low level flunkies, middlemen, and higher level henchmen); occasionally, you will actually find the gang leader out and about. Many gang members carry gang tokens, symbols of their allegience. Also, for reasons known only to The Merovingian, some high level gang members carry key cards to hack into the access codes for off-limit areas of the city.

This requires multiple visits to the area, and when they are all defeated, a side quest becomes available during which you hunt down the gang's leadership. When you have completely eradicated a gang you are able to collect a reward from A Friend. This is not marked on your map or journal as a quest, but is a bonus for cleaning the streets. A Friend only appears at night, in the back room of The Hanged Man. She will continue to give out rewards each time the player clears out a band of thugs in the subsequent side quests.
