Synopsis
  • The Guardian and the Zamaron travel across the world, seeking out those chosen to participate in the Millennium Project: Betty Clawman, an Australian aborigine, Takeo Yakata, a Japanese businessman, Xiang Po, a young citizen of Shanghai, Nikolai Latikov, a Soviet official, Celia Windward, a British black woman, Salima Baranizar, an Iranian woman, Janwillem Kroef, a South African govern- ment leader, and Gregorio de la Vega, a Peruvian layabout. En route, they meet Harbinger, who offers her aid, but when they inform her that her history of the heroes of Earth has fallen into the hands of the Manhunters, she races to the Manhunters' homeworld to undo the harm she has caused. While the Cans are engaged in their search, across the country the Manhunters' sleeper agents strike. Lana Lang appears at the offices of the Daily Planet and attempts to expose Clark Kent as Superman, Commissioner Gordon tries to murder Batman, and Overthrow challenges the Blue Beetle. Back at the GL Citadel, Tom Kalmaku revives, having been brought there and his injuries healed by Kilowog. He tells what he knows of the Manhunters' plans. Herupa and Nadia then return and, to everyone's surprise, name Tom as one of the Chosen. Meanwhile, the tenth and final chosen one, Terra's replacement, rants in his cell at Arkham Asylum: the Floronic Man.
