He played three years for KalPa Kuopio in Finland before joining Clarkson University in 1991. The Edmonton Oilers chose him 205th overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft and brought him up at the ned of Clarkson's 1994-95 season for five games. That was the only time he played for the Oilers. Tuomainen spent the next two years in the minor pros and returned to Finland to play for HIFK Helsinki for two seasons. Tuomainen played for Finland in the 1992 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and the 1998, 1999, and the 2000 World Championships.

An offer from the Los Angeles Kings in 1999 brought him back to North America and he played a full season for the Kings, scoring 9 goals and 8 assists in 63 games. He went back to the minors but did get into a few games with the Kings and the New York Islanders. In 2002 he again returned to Finland to play for the Blues Espoo team for two years (2002 to 2004). He then played in Switzerland for five seasons. He played the 2009-10 season in Italy for Brunico SG. Tuomainen played for Finland in the 1992 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and the 1998, 1999, and the 2000 World Championships.
