- Rick Grimes is the main protagonist and a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's The Walking Dead. He is a former police officer of the King County sheriff's deputy who was shot in the line of duty and fell into a coma only to wake up and find himself in the middle of an undead apocalypse. He travels to Atlanta, Georgia searching for his family, Lori, his wife, and Carl, his son, who have travelled to Atlanta with his best friend, Shane Walsh, in search of a safe-haven.
- In the comic book series, Rick remains the longest-living survivor, followed closely behind by his son, Andrea (a friend and lover), the orphan Sophia, and Sophia's adoptive mother, Maggie Greene. In both media, Rick awakens from a coma into the apocalypse and searches for Lori and Carl and finds them in the Atlanta camp with his best friend, Shane, and becomes the group's leader. Although Rick quickly adapts to the notion of killing walkers, he retains his morality, which puts him at odds with Shane, whose own morality has diminished. Rick's morality is constantly tested to protect his family and friends. Over time, he becomes colder and more brutal, which puts him at odds with other survivors who adopt the same mindset. - He soon learned that Walkers took over the world, and ended Earth. Grimes then swore to destroy the Walkers and return Earth to its formal glory. He soon met a group of survivors, and the created the Anti-Walker Force. The AWF soon became extremely powerful but were ultimately destroyed by the Walkers. Grimes, being that last living human, went into hiding. Eventually, the virus that turned humans into Walkers spread to animals, but it had a different effect on them.
