  • After the First World War, the Weimar Republic emerged in the place of the German Empire, with some of it partitioned by the treaty of Versailles. Despite its lead in many scientific and artistic fields at this time, amidst the Great Depression, the republic was plagued with a multitude of problems. While never resorting to fascism, Alfred Hugenberg and his right-wing DNVP seized control of the nation. During the Great World War, a Communist resistance known as the Kommfrei (from Kommunistisch - Communist - and Freiheit - Freedom) arose with Soviet support. Shortly after Hugenberg's death, Kommfrei stormed Berlin and installed an unstable communist state.
