The ship was named for the 14th century Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta, known for his extensive travels over a period of thirty years through the known Islamic world and many non-Muslim lands. He was considered one of the great travellers of all time. By 2162, it was under the command of Captain Hussain and was considered one of the oldest cargo freighters still in service.
