It was first developed to counter the loss of Imperial freighters to pirates and the Rebel Alliance. The Star Galleon is another Imperial success for Kuat. Even if an attacker is able to withstand a Star Galleon-class ship's armament, or break through its shields, it is difficult to steal its cargo. The interior contains sophisticated anti-intruder defenses, and is defended by a ship's complement of up to three hundred troopers. As a last resort, the cargo hold can actually be detached and sent into hyperspace as a separate vessel. A built-in homing device allows Imperial agents to track the cargo hold, as it automatically jumps at random through hyperspace.

While only 300 meters long, this ship could carry 100,000 tons of cargo, and due to several other features, it was used mainly for high-priority cargoes to make sure they arrive. This ship's weapons can escort itself to and from destinations. Each Star Galleon is armed with ten turbolasers and a high-capacity concussion missile launcher with 50 missiles. Even if some ship could manage to break through the weapons and military-grade shields, the doomed frigate could actually eject its 100K cargo pod, which in itself has its own hyperdrive. An encrypted homing beacon on the pod alerts Astragon ships to the pod's location, which would normally be jumping through hyperspace at random. The pod would then be interdicted and pulled in to release its cargo. Once the pod is empty, it was refueled and attached to a new Star Galleon.
