The Age of Enlightenment was a time period during the 2nd century BC when a bunch of cowardly French gays got together in their hair salons and decided to get rid of the Catholic Church using the satanic ideas of Reason and Science. Unfortunately, some of their ideas caught on and the Dark Ages, the height of human civilization, ended. Some historians claim that the ideas of the cowardly French inspired the Founding Fathers in their formulation of the Bill of Rights, but this is patently untruthy. We all know everything the Founding Fathers did was the result of divine inspiration.

It was promoted by philosophers and challenged the authority of institutions that were deeply rooted in society, especially the Roman Catholic Church; there was much talk of ways to reform society with toleration, science and skepticism. Philosophers including René Descartes (1596–1650), John Locke (1632–1704), Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677), Montesquieu (1689-1755), Voltaire (1694–1778), David Hume (1711–1776), Immanuel Kant (1724–1804), Isaac Newton (1642–1727) and Thomas Paine (1737–1809) influenced society by publishing widely read works. New ideas and beliefs spread around the continent and were fostered by an increase in literacy due to a departure from solely religious texts. . Some of these ideals proved influential and decisive in the course of the French Revolution, which began in 1789.

  • The Age of Enlightenment (or simply the Enlightenment) is a term used to describe a time in Western philosophy and cultural life, centered upon the eighteenth century, in which reason was advocated as the primary source and legitimacy for authority. Developing more or less simultaneously in Germany, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Portugal, and buoyed by the North American colonists' successful rebellion against Great Britain in the American War of Independence, the culmination of the movement spread through much of Europe, including the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Russia and Scandinavia, along with Latin America and instigating the Haitian Revolution. It has been argued that the signatories of the American Declaration of Independence, the United States Bill of Rights, the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, and the Polish-Lithuanian Constitution of May 3, 1791, were motivated by "Enlightenment" principles.
