He played junior hockey for the Edmonton Strathconas from 1930 to 1932 and then embarked on a nine year career (1932 to 1941) in senior hockey in Alberta. Five of those years were spent with the Lethbridge Maple Leafs. In 1941-42 Stewart played the only professional hockey of his career. He played six games (scoring a goal and an assist) with the Chicago Blackhawks and 41 games with the Kansas City Americans. After that year he played four seasons with the Calgary Currie Army and continued in senior hockey in Alberta, British Columbia, and the Los Angeles Ramblers. He retired in 1951.
