Junipero High School was a private Catholic high school in the San Fernando Valley near West Hills, California. The student body was typical Southern California and not just Catholics. In addition to Irish and Hispanic kids, there were a number of Jewish kids as well as Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus and Koreans. Miller found teaching the basics limiting and left him no time or energy to do original scholarship. He therefore continued to apply for teaching positions at universities and colleges until he received an offer from Wayne State College which he accepted.

Bryce Miller got a teaching position at Junipero after the Yellowstone Supervolcano erupted. He taught Latin, world history and U.S. history (the last staying a chapter ahead of his students). Due to the high cost of gasoline, he could not afford to commute and so moved to West Hills which was within walking distance.
