One the many lesser-known Nintendo characters to sneak into Summer 2003 was AiAi of Super Monkey Ball fame, and this is where the much-hyped Summer 2003 Contest kicked off. Much like Summer 2002, the first match wasn't about who would win, but by how much the favorite would win by. Link was the overwhelming favorite going into this thing (if odds were created, Link's would have been lower than 1.5:1, which is RIDICULOUS), and even with CJayC announcing that he would use Wind Waker pics in all of Link's matches Link still looked every bit the contest favorite in his first match. Breaking 90,000 votes was absolutely unheard of in 2002, yet Link broke that with ease in this match. The match itself also managed to break 100,000 total votes, which was also nearly unheard of in 2002.

But above all was Link breaking the 90% barrier, a feat that only the true elites will ever have the chance to see, and starting this contest off by letting everyone know that he was the character to beat going in. Granted this may have had a little bit of SFF attached, but 90% is difficult to break regardless of who the opponent was. All that there was left to do from here was to soak in the blowout, welcome in a new contest and see what would happen next. • (No Previous Match) • Next Match
