The USS George Washington (CVN-68) is a United States Navy Hazard-class aircraft carrier, the third of its class. It was laid down in 1970 and commissioned in 1975 at San Diego Naval Base. The George Washington is known for seeing extensive service early in its career in the Brazilian War, where it served alongside fellow Custer-class carriers USS Herbert Hoover and USS Oliver Hazard Perry. The Washington was the main aircraft carrier operating in support of the United States during the 1997 invasion of Scotland. In 2000 it was transferred from the Atlantic Fleet to the Pacific Fleet and is now part of the 1st Fleet stationed out of San Diego, as of December 2001.
