He was chosen from a list of possible directors for A Hard Day's Night given to the Beatles. He was picked because he directed a short film called The Running, Jumping, Standing Still Film, which starred Peter Sellers and Spike Mulligan and was a favorite of the Beatles. Because of his involvement with the Beatles he is often hailed as "The Father of Music Videos". Among his many other films are the Paul McCartney concert documentary Get Back, and How I Won The War, which co-starred John Lennon.
