- The Bonneville Salt Flats were a 12,000 hectare (159 square mile) salt flat in northwestern Utah on Earth. It was a remnant of an ancient glacial lake which once filled the surrounding Great Basin region. It was used in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries as a speed-testing ground for land vehicles, some reaching speeds in excess of a thousand miles an hour. The Bonneville Flats region of Federation space, a testing ground for new warp technologies, took its name from the Earth location. (TLE novel: Serpents Among the Ruins)
