On the world of Gwendor, two kingdoms reside side-by-side, separated by a great valley. In one, the city of Neroes, the population consists entirely of men. In the other, Gwendor, women rule unopposed. Once every two years, the men and women come together for the “Great Madness” during which they briefly mate before returning to their respective kingdoms.

In Gwendor, three warriors queens rule over all. One of these, the Topaz Queen, was famed for her ferocity in battle. It was she who challenged the strange visitor known as Mantra to a duel, hoping to win back the “claw of Gwendor” which Mantra used as a weapon. Their battle was temporarily set aside as the kingdom of Gwendor fell under assault from the sorcerer Boneyard. During the resulting conflict, Topaz was accidentally sent to Earth in the Ultraverse.
