The 1985–86 Hartford Whalers season saw the Whalers finish in fourth place in the Adams Division with a record of 40 wins, 36 losses, and 4 ties for 84 points. They beat the Quebec Nordiques in the Adam Division Semi-Fianals in three games, but lost the Adams Division Finals in seven games to the Montreal Canadiens. This was the first and only time in team history that the Whalers qualified for the second round of the playoffs.
