An OTA widely used in synthesizer circuits. It was originally designed by RCA and introduced in 1969 as the CA3080, and that designation was continued by most of the other IC vendors who manufacturered the part. Although it was not the best performing OTA available, it was made in large quantities and was inexpensive. Additionally, it was a fairly simple matter to build a VCA or VCF with one. Therefore, the 3080 became the canonical OTA for synthesizer applications. Unfortunately, Intersil, the last remaining manufacturer, discontinued the part in 2005, and remaining new-old stock is now difficult to find. For other examples of OTAs widely used in synths, see 3280 and 13700.
