The Boston Bruins signed him as a free agent in 1972 and assigned him to the Boston Braves for two seasons and then one with the Rochester Americans. In the 1975-76 season, Reece started the season for the Bruins but was soon sidelined by the return of Gerry Cheevers from the World Hockey Association. Before being sent it the minors, he was the starting goalie in one more game. Reece is most (in)famous for being the goalie who surrendered eleven goals against the Toronto Maple Leafs on February 7, 1976 which was significant in that Darryl Sittler scored an NHL-record ten points in that game. Reece played the whole game and was never pulled by coach Don Cherry, and after that night he would never play in the NHL again. He was nicknamed "In the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time Reece". He split the 1976-77 season between the Rochester Americans and the Rhode Island Reds and then retired. In international hockey, Dave Reece served as Mike Curran's backup at the 1977 Ice Hockey World Championship tournament in Vienna. He also was a member of the preliminary US Olympic roster for the 1972 Winter Olympics but did not make the final cut.
