Dale Darwin Smedsmo (born August 23, 1951 in Bemidji, Minnesota) is a retired American professional ice hockey forward who played 4 games in the National Hockey League for the Toronto Maple Leafs.   • Dale Darwin Smedsmo (born August 23, 1951 in Bemidji, Minnesota) is a retired American professional ice hockey forward who played 4 games in the National Hockey League for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He would also play 110 games in the World Hockey Association with the New England Whalers, Cincinnati Stingers, and Indianapolis Racers. His stepson is Dustin Byfuglien, who plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. He played college hockey for the Bemidji State University from 1970 to 1972 and was chosen 93rd overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. He turned pro in the Leafs' system in 1972 and saw his only four NHL games in 1972-73. Smedsmo played the rest of his career in the minors except for a full season (1975-76) with the Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association (WHA) and 34 other WHA games scattered across two seasons. In 110 WHA games Smedsmo scored 10 goals and 22 assists. He retired in 1979.
