An alkali is a soluble base. An example of a alkali is potassium hydroxide. Because all alkalis are bases, but not all bases are alkalis, we can say that the set of alkalis is a subset of the set of all bases. (See sets)

  • The Alkali (also known as Alkaline in the SNES/PS version) is an enemy in Chrono Trigger that appears in the Derelict Factory in the Future. Mostly amorphous blobs of green goop, these creatures exhibit some humanoid features such as mouths, eyes, and arms. Occasionally, they curl up into puddles, which increases their Defense. Attacking them should cause them to unfurl into the true form. Alkali share similar palette forms with Acid, Shadows, and Ion Cloud, and often accompany large groups of them in battle. The main difference is the color. Acid are orange, Shadow are purple, Ion Clouds are black, and Alkali are green.
  • Flag of Alkali The Alkaline flag is a simplification of Teton's flag; the light of Ursideanism, in this case a rising sun over the flat, arid landscape of much of Alkali, lighting the inherent darkness of the world. Alkali is a failed, or more precisely, a state which never completely formed, and a member of the Tokamak Council, along with Teton and North Teton. Alkaline society is tribal-based. Tribal identity is, for most Alkalines, the primary loyalty. Tribalism is relatively less important for those sub-clans of the Vasatch tribe who have settled in the capital city of Saltine.

There is central authority figure recognized by the international community. Alkali's government, such as it is, revolves around The Council of the Five Brothers (Pa'Tzavya Vrachan Ojenn), which meets in the capital city of Saltine. The Council claims to govern the country, but its writ outside the capital area is not always accepted by the tribes if it is seen as detrimental to their interests. Each tribe appoints a representative to sit as a "Brother" on the Council. Representatives are often, though not always, the tribal leader. The head of the Council is not a national leader in the commonly accepted use of the word. The Council operates by seeking consensus among the members. Influence is proportional to the amount of respect of one’s tribe, as wells as respect garnered personally. There is no specified term of service for Council representatives. They serve as long as they have the confidence of their respective tribes. As concensus is most important, a Brother most often will be removed by his tribe is he proves unable to cooperate with the other Brothers. Warlords rule in the outlying areas. Although strained at times, relations between them and the Council have been improving, and the warlords generally follow the guidance of the Council. Brothers, usually working through committees comprised of their retainers and assistants, appoint government ministers and other officials. Nepotism is rampant, leading to much lobbying over the apportionment of government positions. A minister can be removed upon a majority vote of the Council. Current makeup of the Council: Vasatch - Tribal leader Xeffer (pronounced kheffer) Kanab is Alkali’s current “leader,” sitting as head of the Council. Kanab is also Alkali's current representative to the Tokamak Council. Xixi (pronounced hiksee) - Unbarad Demontal, Minister of the Interior and Religious Affairs Sahven - Mokadad Venalanar, Minister of Foreign Affairs Parven - Uspex (oospekh) Shaban, Minister of Military Issues Panigutch - Kramasaq "Masaq" Zhenkuye, Minister of Infrastructure
