The Unity base was developed in the year 2378 with the intention of making the most advanced starbase in the galaxy in order to represent the accomplishments of the alliance between the Klingons and the Federation. As part of the design, the station's sophisticated sensor array allowed it to detect even cloaked vessels that were many sectors away. Admiral Arai has hinted that these sensors would be able to detect cloaked ships from 20 light-years away which, according to Tal Shiar calculations, ran them a radius of eight sectors' worth of space around Unity One.
