  • The Green Moth Society, often just referred to as the Society, is a fellowship of scientists and thinkers that appear in Might and Magic: The Dreamwright and Might and Magic: The Shadowsmith. Its members are on a ceaseless quest for knowledge, which is widely considered important enough for them to be allowed to come and go as they please in most civilized lands. Pomponderant, Derbelderhed, and Pandandoleet were members of the Society. According to Pomponderant, the Society came into formal being 817 years ago. Before that, there had been loose associations of wandering gatherers that wanted to add to the total store of humanity's knowledge in one way or another. But one day, a scholar that studied insects came across a new form of moth - a large creature with green wings and body. He knew no one had ever seen anything like this before, so he spent two years gathering specimens before he managed to track it to a hidden cave in the western mountains. Inside the cave, there was an object that looked like a great oval mirror, but instead of reflecting, it showed an image of a wide field under a large, red sun. The scholar spent days watching the green moths flutter around, occasionally drinking from strange, remarkable flowers. From time to time, green moths would come fluttering into the cave, and once, a furry creature stuck its nose past the frame, but squeaked and ran away when it saw him. Eventually, the man managed to tear himself away from the mirror long enough to travel back and inform his colleagues of what he had seen. Most of them thought he was mad, but a few of them followed him back to the cave to see it. Before their eyes, he stepped into the magic portal, which immediately became a normal mirror. The man was never seen again, the portal was closed forever, and when winter came, the green moths died. The scholars then formed the Green Moth Society in the man's honor, and spent centuries looking for another doorway into that world. Over the years, the pursuit of the green moth changed from a literal quest to a metaphorical search for unknown knowledge. They sought beneficial relationships with those that could aid them in this, like Amonwelle and the Dreamwright. With the aid of the Staff of Blue Light, Hitch somehow found himself in the other world, and picked up a dead moth to bring back to Pomponderant. When the old scholar finally laid eyes on the moth, he was absolutely speechless.
