The Vampire squid, or the Vampire squid of hell, (Vampyroteuthis infernalis), is a small, deep-sea cephalopod found throughout the temperate and tropical oceans of the world. Unique retractile sensory filaments justify the vampire squid's placement in its own order Vampyromorphida (formerly Vampyromorpha), which shares similarities with both squid and octopuses. As a phylogenetic relict it is the only known surviving member of its order, first described and originally classified as an octopus in 1903 by German teuthologist Carl Chun, but later assigned to a new order together with several extinct taxa.

- Vampire squids are a nearly extinct species of abnormal squid. They are called "vampire" not because they drink blood (they subsist on plankton) but because of their high intelligence. They have been known to create complex geometrical patterns on the ocean floor. They live in burrows near coral reefs. They are normally very peaceful, so peaceful they are often killed by predators when young. They become very violent however in the presence of Southern-hemispheric sea scorpions.

They are normally very peaceful, so peaceful they are often killed by predators when young. They become very violent however in the presence of Southern-hemispheric sea scorpions. In real life, vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) rarely grow more than a foot long, while their Sanctuary counterparts are as big as giant squid. They are so named because they appear reddish-black, have large, red eyes, and have a cape-like webbing between their tentacles. Most unusually, they have no suckers on their arms, only teeth-like protrusions.
