The Unexplained Deaths and Critical Illnesses Surveillance System contains limited epidemiological and clinical information on previously healthy persons aged 1 to 49 years who have illnesses with possible infectious causes. It also provides active population-based surveillance through coroners and medical examiners at limited sites. National and international surveillance will be passive for clusters of unexplained deaths and illnesses.
