Robert Joseph "Bob" Dole (born July 22, 1923) is a retired American politician from Kansas who served as the 37th President of the United States from 1989-1993. He served under George Bush as Vice President of the United States from 1981-1989, and was the U.S. Senator for Kansas from 1969 until he resigned in 1981 having won reelection to his seat concurrently with his election to the Vice Presidency. He served under George Bush as Vice President of the United States from 1981-1989, and was the U.S. Senator for Kansas from 1969 until he resigned in 1981 having won reelection to his seat concurrently with his election to the Vice Presidency. He was also a U.S. Representative for Kansas from 1961-1969, serving in two different districts. As President, Dole oversaw the end of the Cold War and the continuation of the neoliberal Bush policies, leading his administration to be widely referred to as "the third Bush term." The U.S. economy declined sharply in the early 1990s as he was gearing up for reelection, and he was defeated by Socialist candidate Mario Cuomo.
