The public pier in Santa Monica is a Los Angeles landmark that has been involved in at least two of Harry Bosch's cases. In early 1996 William Gladden was at the pier looking for naked children to photograph for his pedophile web site. He was arrested by Santa Monica police, ultimately leading to the identification of The Poet. In March and April 2010 Jason Jessup constructed a hiding place in the storage area under the pier. His hiding place included a trap door leading up to the surface of the pier.
