He reigned jointly with his mother Empress Cleopatra VIII from 27 BC until his mother died in 16 June 7 BC. He was the eldest son of Cleopatra IX, and the only son of Caesarion (also called Ptolemy XV of Egypt), himself the son of Cleopatra VII, the last Ptolemaic Queen of Egypt and Julius Caesar. It was from Ptolemy I's bloodline that the Ptolemaic dynasty continues to flow through the veins of the Imperial house of Diadochia.
