Seattle Central Community College opened as Edison Technical School in 1946, and first offered college courses in 1965 before evolving into the city's first community college in 1966. The main campus was originally the location of Broadway High School, which opened in 1902 after demand caused by the 1890s Gold Rush population explosion. The Broadway High Alumni Association continues to support Seattle Central and contributes to scholarship programs for the school.
