Plotholes (also rendered plot hole) are those annoying gaps in a story where things happen without a logical reason. When a Plothole involves something essential to a story's outcome, it can hurt the believability severely for those who are bothered by it. They can be created either through bad characterization, inconsistent plotting, or the existence of something contradicted in canon. Note that a Plothole is inherently a contradiction. A Plot element that is merely left unexplained is not a Plothole unless its occurrence is impossible according to the setting's rules.

  • |- |This article is about the strange phenomenon. For the event when a player's post is deliberately contradicted by another, see Miserable Failure. |} A plothole is a mysterious phenomenon which occurs either when a character vanishes without explanation, or when a player's post is accidentally contradicted by another post. Because of their unpredictable nature, very little can be done to clear at least some of the mystery surrounding plotholes, but what is known is that they have nothing to do with black holes. Further research may result in more discoveries, but in the meantime, we know very little about the subject of this article. The effects of a plothole on an individual are extremely unpredictable (like the plotholes themselves), but they have been known to include the affected individual inadvertently contradicting either himself or others, or mysteriously disappearing, possibly ending up in the plothole itself.

Accidental encounters of agents with plotholes can have a wide range of unpredictable effects. Missing characters will find themselves in a literal hole in the fabric of the world, from which they can be pulled out. A plothole once rendered Jay Thorntree and Acacia Byrd's invisible belongings visible. Plotholes are related to Logic Loopholes.
