In the Bloody Roar series, the majority of Zoanthropes are primarily mammals and feline. Whether or not a feline alter-ego is the dominant type is uncertain; the games do not go farther into the background of Zoanthropes outside of the main characters in-game. Zoanthropes seem to be a natural occurrence however as many of the characters seem to be born with the ability. It also appears the ability can be passed on through a family bloodline as evident by Yugo gaining his abilities from his father who was a natural Zoanthrope.

| - The Zoanthrope is a mysterious type of Tyranid that has been created from Eldar DNA. Zoanthropes are highly psychic and act as synapse creatures for the Hive Mind's armies. They wield powerful bolts of psychic energy against their foes. Combat Effectiveness The Zoanthrope essentially functions as a long range psychic cannon or a biological version of the Eldar D-Cannon platform. Zoanthropes move slowly and die easily but they supply the advantages(and disadvantages) of being a synapse creature. With the synapse, the Zoanthrope can supply nearby Tyranids with bonuses; however, the death of the zoanthrope causes a tremendous psychic backlash which can destroy large numbers of nearby units if they are less durable than a Lichtor which is still considered fragile. The Zoanthrope can fire special bolts of psychic lightning which deal area damage and can project a warp field using it's energy. The warp field is considered ineffective in heavy battle because it costs energy to start the ability and to maintain it, causing constant energy loss. To worsen matters, the warp field causes its energy reserves to take the damage leaving it without it's abilities within seconds.

It also appears the ability can be passed on through a family bloodline as evident by Yugo gaining his abilities from his father who was a natural Zoanthrope. However, it is a common theme in the games that a Zoanthrope transformation can be forced by experimentation. Alice is an example of a Zoanthrope experiment that resulted in success. Experiments conducted on Stun made him a Zoanthrope, but the result was an unstable and deformed body. Uriko was a victim of too many experiments, and therefore has an altered, lesser beast form instead of her original Chimera form. It is also suggested in Bloody Roar 4 that Zoanthrope abilities can be passed from a Zoanthrope to a human, though this has only been proven in regards to the Unborn. Xion stabbed Nagi and she became the Spurious. The games never expand upon the idea of a bite or a scratch from a Zoanthrope mutating humans into beasts.

After hurling numerous psychic bolts or sustaining their shield for an extended period, their craniums have been observed to burst and bleed out, sending them crashing limply to the ground. Imperial Psykers who have witnessed these events liken it to the perils of the Warp which normal psykers can suffer when psychic energy overloads their minds. In addition to their ability to hurl powerful bolts of Warp energy at their foes, Zoanthropes are also very difficult to destroy, especially considering how weak and feeble their actual bodies are. This resilience stems from their ability to create a powerful bubble of Warp energy around themselves, shielding them from all kind of weapons and even turning aside physical blows in close combat. Like their ability to drift above the ground by extending a bubble of Warp energy around themselves, the psychic shield seems to be constant regenerated by the Zoanthrope and is always present as long as the creature lives. It has been noted that the shield seems to strengthen or coalesce around particularly powerful attacks, flashing bright for an instant to turn aside the blow before fading back to a uniform shimmer surrounding the alien psyker.
