A powerful cruiser design from the Calidna Research and Development Labs, the Excalibur-class Cruiser was designed as a close fighting vessel which could support a larger ship. Built in traditional Omega design architecture, overall appearances were taken from the Bulk Cruiser/Carrier and the Dreadnaught designs, but given a Muir bent and changed to a degree. It was also the first instance of the usage of design values that would eventually become the Muir Core Values of ship design, a process of thought that would play a heavy factor in the design and development of the Sarithe-class.

abstract
  • A powerful cruiser design from the Calidna Research and Development Labs, the Excalibur-class Cruiser was designed as a close fighting vessel which could support a larger ship. Built in traditional Omega design architecture, overall appearances were taken from the Bulk Cruiser/Carrier and the Dreadnaught designs, but given a Muir bent and changed to a degree. Though it took extra time and effort, the design is a modular one, after the designers looked at the three captured Strike-class Cruisers which had been incorporated into the fleet. The designers cast out the traditional missile approach of former Omega designers, giving the ship extensive weapons against enemy fighters and missiles. Two squadrons of fighters are its complement, though the ship is designed to be alongside a larger vessel. It is also the first Muir Corporation vessel to be designed with backup shields, something taken from the three Mon Calamari cruisers first used by the Corporation, the Drake and the two MC55 cruisers. A supposed taskforce organization would consist of two Excalibur-class Cruisers with a single larger vessel, either a MC80b or a Imperial-class Star Destroyer. With the advent of the Sarithe-class Battlecruiser, the Excalibur design is being utilized in conjunction with the Sarithe-class, while work is being done to make it a better complement to the Sarithe-class. It was also the first instance of the usage of design values that would eventually become the Muir Core Values of ship design, a process of thought that would play a heavy factor in the design and development of the Sarithe-class.
