by user R1234 The White House counsel is asserting the executive branch's right to messages sent by Karl Rove on his GWB43.com account run by the RNC. The RNC set up these accounts strictly for political work to avoid violating the Hatch Act which forbids government employees from doing political work on government time and with government property. Either way, the current position untenable. __NOEDITSECTION__ From The Opinion Wiki, a Wikia wiki. From The Opinion Wiki, a Wikia wiki.

  • by user R1234 The White House counsel is asserting the executive branch's right to messages sent by Karl Rove on his GWB43.com account run by the RNC. The RNC set up these accounts strictly for political work to avoid violating the Hatch Act which forbids government employees from doing political work on government time and with government property. The problem is that the administration is currently arguing that the email traffic on the "political" accounts is theirs to control under the constitutional executive privilege system -- which should apply only to privileged communication between the president and his immediate advisors. Which leads to the obvious conclusion that the White House has been violating federal law regarding the storage and archival of government records. Either that or they are asserting a right they aren't entitled to. Either they were doing government work and not storing it legally -- or they were not doing government work and cannot claim executive privilege. Either way, the current position untenable. __NOEDITSECTION__ From The Opinion Wiki, a Wikia wiki. From The Opinion Wiki, a Wikia wiki.
