  • EndGame is a Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comic) story arc published by Archie Comics. It officially encompasses issues 47 through 50, although Sonic VS Knuckles: Battle Royale directly leads up to the events. It has been revered as the high point of the comic's run. The plot chronicles Sonic being caught up in a conspiracy that threatens to destroy the planet. It starts with the apparent sudden restoration of King Acorn, who warns Sally to beware of Sonic for some reason that she doesn't trust. She and Sonic go on a mission to infiltrate Robotnik's lair as he is developing a weapon called the Ultimate Annihilator, and while Sonic is somewhere else completely, "another" Sonic appears and sends Sally plummeting to the ground, pronounced dead at the scene. Sonic returns home only to find that the entirety of Knothole has turned against him and has him arrested and deported to the Devil's Gulag. At the same time, Dr. Quack is blackmailed by Robotnik's regime for some mysterious purpose regarding Sally's death. Sonic escapes and ends up on the Floating Island, where Dulcy the Dragon uses her ability to sense the truth to convince St. John, Knuckles and the Chaotix that Sonic has been framed. Meanwhile, Robotnik has taken over Knothole using "King Acorn", really a fake, and sends the Freedom Fighters to prisons owned by his sub-bosses (including Antoine D'Coolette and Bunnie Rabbot, who end up captured by Crocbot). Sonic, St. John and Knuckles manage to free Knothole, while Hershey the Cat reveals that Draco Wolf was the real traitor and tricked her into wearing the Sonic costume to cut Sally's rope. Antoine and Bunnie join the Downunda Freedom Fighters to escape as the others fight in Knothole, and Sonic takes on Robotnik on his own. Robotnik threatens to destroy Knothole with the Ultimate Annihilator, and just when it is about to go off in their fight, only Robotnik is destroyed rather than the entire planet, due to Snively's tampering with the device in pursuit of revenge. Sonic is accepted by the Freedom Fighters and Dr. Quack reveals that he had faked Sally's death certificate and that she is still alive. She soon revives. Besides the much-publicized death of Robotnik, many other side effects came about from this story, most notably the arrest of Snively Kintobor and Draco Wolf and their new status as major villains. Another is the void that Robotnik leaves and for which his "sub-bosses" compete as the Freedom Fighters simply try to restore Mobotropolis. Finally, Sally's near-death experience left her shaken as a leader and much more susceptible to being swayed by the duties her father gives her, such as disbanding the Freedom Fighters and marrying someone she does not love, both of which she would have strongly objected to without question in the past. It is said that Sally was originally slated to have died in the event, but SEGA of America wished to keep her alive for promotional purposes.
