Her parents were Sherman & Mary Shimer. She had 8 other siblings. On 28 July 1928, she married Emmanuel Boltz. The couple had two children in total, both sons. She worked as a farmer. According to her family, the secret to her longevity is that everything she ate was home-produced ecologically on her farm. Ethel’s younger brother James Harold Shimer lived to be 100 and passed away in June 2015. One of her sisters is still alive at age 96. She died on 1 April 2016 at the age of 112 years, 121 days.
