Allied forces pressed continuously toward the main Japanese islands, and there were two choices to end the war: ground invasion or nuclear attack. The US chose nuclear attack to bring about the fastest resolution possible while at the same time show foreign powers (particularly the Soviet Union) the power of the weapon eveloped by the Allies in the Manhattan Project.
