| - Castle is an area in New Rochelle, New York. The Castle area includes New Rochelle's 'Downtown' area as well as select residential and estate sections located to the north, encompassing both the wealthiest and the poorest sections of the City. As of the census of 2000, there were 36,284 people, 12,740 households, and 8,399 families residing in the Castle zip-code area. There were 13,105 housing units, 40% of which were owner occupied. The racial makeup of was 56% White, 28% Black or African American, 0%Native American, 3%Asian and 4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28% of the population. There were 12,740 households out of which 4,378 had children under the age of 18 living with them. 5,693 were married couples living together, 2,052 had a female householder with no husband present, and 4,341 were non-families. 1,581 households constituted someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average family size was 3.6 people. In the Castle zip-code area, the population was spread out with 25% under the age of 18, 26% from 18 to 34, 36% from 35 to 64, 12% from 65 to 84, and 2% who were 85 years of age or older. 9,838 residents of Castle were enrolled in school, with 12% (1,190) in pre-school or kindergarten, 43%(4,262) in elementary school, 2,006 (20%) in high school and 2,380 (24%) in college or graduate school. 45% of the adult population had completed 'college', with 12% attaining a 'graduate degree' or higher. About 14% of the population was below the poverty line, including 18% of those under age 18 and 16% of those age 65 or over. The total civilian labor force was 17,113 residents, out of which 16,186 (94.6%) were employed. The median income for a household in the Castle zip-code area was $61,282 , and the median income for a family was $92,955. 2,037 households (16%) earned $100,000 or more.
