He played junior hockey in the Thunder Bay area from 1966 to 1970 and played at the University of Denver from 1970 to 1972. Venasky was chosen 34th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. Venasky jumped right into the Kings' lineup in 1972-73. The next season he suffered a groin pull. It hampered his play for two seasons as he went from the Kings to the minor pros and back. In 1975-76 he rejoined the Kings full-time. He played another four seasons followed by a year with the Binghamton Dusters. He split the 1980-81 season between HC Davos and the Thunder Bay Twins.
