Failing to score any points, he left for Champ Car, scoring a rookie pole at the Indianapolis 500 and finishing a close second in the championship. Despite starting a second Champ Car campaign, Fabi made his way back into F1 in 1984, with the Brabham. Despite scoring nine points (including a podium) and suffering a series of retirements, Fabi was dropped. He rejoined Toleman three races into 1985, and scored a surprise pole for the team at the German Grand Prix. However, a clutch slip saw him fall to eighth, eventually retiring due to the clutch issues. Like his first season at Toleman, he failed to score any points. Benetton, who had previously sponsored Toleman, took over, and retained Fabi, while bringing in Gerhard Berger. Fabi scored two more pole positions. At the Austrian Grand Prix, he lined up alongside, Berger beat him off the line; Fabi did manage to overtake Berger, but saw his engine fail seconds afterwards. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fabi suffered issues on the parade lap, and saw pole turn into the back of the grid. He eventually retired with a puncture. He ended the season with just two points. Staying with the team into 1987, Fabi had his strongest season, scoring twelve points (including a second podium). However, Alessandro Nannini was signed for 1988 (to partner Thierry Boutsen, Berger's replacement), and Fabi took out his frustration of a lack of a 1988 driver on Boutsen, deliberately blocking his path despite being a lap down. Forced out of the sport, Fabi returned to Champ Car, without a lot of success, and drove in Le Mans, scoring one runners-up place. __TOC__
