Much of the Air Force is assigned to Naval carriers, however some units may remain on ground-side strips or on vessels operated under the UNSC Seaborne Naval Command. The Air Force typically utilizes aerial vehicles such as the F99 Wombat, FAV-14 Sparrowhawk, and Shortsword-class Bomber for aerial dominance. The primary missions of the branch are to serve as the primary aviation-based defensive force of colonial worlds and to provide air support to other uniformed branches of the UNSC.

The UNSC Air Force also has a number of Special Forces programs, all of which fall under the jurisdiction of the Air Force Special Operations Command. These programs include Combat Control Teams, Pararescuers, and Gunship Operators. The Air Force is divided into eight major commands (MAJCOMs) that each serve a unique purpose in the branch. Subordinate to these commands are various Numbered Air Forces that serve as the primary form of aerial division.
