Jim Henson was inspired to design the Skeksis by an illustrated edition of a Lewis Carrol poem showing two elegantly dressed crocodiles in a bathroom. He became intrigued with the idea of a reptilian race assuming control over a formerly splendid past society. Numerous names were proposed for the species, including Skekses, Reptus, Karackt and Skek-sis. Henson himself commented on the difficulty of performing as a skeksis;

  • The Skeksis retained the efficiency and ambition of the old urSkeks, but none of their wisdom and benevolence. Their appearance is skeletal, with light-blue skin and vulture-like facial features. While the Mystics went on to live a peaceful and archaic existence in the valley, the Skeksis remained in their castle and ruled over the planet for a thousand years. They are mostly carnivorous, preparing huge banquets with roasted Nebrie and other native life forms; but are also able to draw their energy from the sun by using the Crystal.
  • The creatures are described in detail in the book The Making of the Dark Crystal: "For every Mystic there was a corresponding Skeksis... The Skeksis had control of the castle where the Crystal was kept; in its chamber they practiced their evil arts, hating each other as much as they hated the rest of the world."

They are masters of the Garthim warriors, the Crystal Bats and the captured Podling slaves drained of their life essence. They have driven the Gelfling race to near extinction, attempting to prevent the Prophecy that stated that during the next Conjunction a Gelfling would heal the Crystal and restore the Skeksis and Mystics to their original state. The Prophecy was ultimately carried out, though. The Skeksis and Mystics have never been a numerous species: by the time of their creation there were eighteen of them; with eight remaining until the time the crystal was healed and they merged back into urSkeks.
  • The creatures are described in detail in the book The Making of the Dark Crystal: "For every Mystic there was a corresponding Skeksis... The Skeksis had control of the castle where the Crystal was kept; in its chamber they practiced their evil arts, hating each other as much as they hated the rest of the world." Possessing all of the negative attributes of society, and none of the positive ones, the Skeksis live out a superficial existence of intrigue and plots against each other while struggling to retain their grip on Thra. They keep essence-drained Podlings as slaves, have their own personal army in the Garthim, and absolutely despise Gelflings, a race they think they have completely exterminated. There were originally eighteen Skeksis, but by the time of the Great Conjunction when they rejoined the Mystics, only eight remained. Skeksis is both singular and plural, but the plural form is pronounced 'Skek-sees'. They say "Hmm" when they are thinking, when they are confused, and when they are fascinated (for example, when SkekSo dies).
