  • George Richard Cundell (1849 - 11 February 1900) was a surgeon and local politician active in the Richmond area. Cundell trained as a doctor at University College Hospital and St Mary's Hospital, qualifying in 1875. After spending time in India he returned to London to work at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington. He subsequently moved to Kew in the Surrey suburbs of London where he set up his own medical practice. He was surgeon to the Royal Hospital, Richmond and and was medical officer to the staff at the Royal Botanic Gardens. He was also medical officer for the Kew District of the Richmond Poor Law Union. When Richmond was incorporated as municipal borough in 1890, Kew was included within the borough boundaries. Cundell was elected as one of Kew's councillors on Richmond Borough Council, and in 1896-97 served as Mayor of Richmond. His term of office coincided with Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and he was responsible for setting up the "Victoria Endowment Fund" for the Richmond Hospital.
