Finland (Finnish Suomi), officially the Democratic Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country situated in the Fennoscandian region of Northern Europe. It is bordered by Sweden on the west, Norway on the north and Russian FSR on the east, while Estonia lies to its south across the Gulf of Finland. Finland was historically a part of Sweden and from 1809 on, an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire. Finland declared its independence in 1918 during World War I and the Russian Revolution.
